Among our many family photos was a series of shots taken during our Lake Michigan vacation, in August of 2003, just as the sun was setting. The photo I selected to draw showed my daughter combing the beach for shells and other interesting finds. I worked on this drawing off and on for a couple weeks. I had finished the sky and the water, and had saved the most difficult portion, an actual person, for last. The photo was so dark, it was difficult to make out the pattern on her shirt. Fortunately, I found another photo, taken indoors, showing her wearing that same shirt.
At this point, on an entirely unrelated mission, I entered the basement of a house having an estate sale, to look over a music CD collection. A mother and her daughter were also in the basement. As soon as I saw the daughter, I exclaimed, “Woah!” You are wearing the same shirt my daughter used to wear when she was your age.” The mother looked at me a bit sideways. Fortunately, I had a copy of this photo on my phone, which I showed her, adding “I didn’t mean to alarm you, but I’ve been working on a drawing of this photo for two weeks, and that’s why I was so staggered to see the same shirt on your daughter.” I could almost feel the mother dial down her DEFCON level.
