River's Edge; Autumn's End

  • Ink Drawing on Paper
  • 9 inches x 12 inches
  • Prints Only

I’d been working on drawings of urban settings recently, so I was looking for a natural landscape to work on. I came across this photo on the Pexels.com website, as a “free stock photo” but otherwise offering no information about its location or photographer. I am usually drawn to scenes containing a lot of color, but with this image, it was the lack of color that seemed to draw me in. It consists almost entirely of pale, withered leaves, and light-gray bark.

The other feature of this image that held my attention was that it seemed actually to contain two separate images, first a realistic rendition of the forest, and below the waterline, an impressionistic interpretation of the same.
